Substitute Teacher Service, (STS) is proud to announce the implementation of the STS/IU-13 Guest Teacher Program. This program allows those who have a 4 year degree to take an online training program that would prepare them for teaching in the classroom as a day to day substitute teacher.

This program is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania and is exclusive to STS. The program will enhance the abilities of guest teachers to assure the education and well-being of the children is our top priority.

Working with STS, you may be eligible for unemployment compensation during the summer months.   We also offer direct deposit and an online system for managing your job schedule and accepting work assignments.

 

 

Position Summary
A substitute teacher is an individual who, in the absence of the classroom teacher, is responsible for providing instruction and managing the learning environment. The substitute teacher reports to the principal or designee at the location to which they are assigned.

Job Duties
Day to day job duties of a substitute teacher are determined by the classroom teacher or his/her designee, as they may vary depending upon the changing needs of the classroom(s), student(s), and/or school district. Substitute teachers of any capacity are subject to daily reassignment, depending on the needs of the day. The substitute teacher must comply with the duties outlined by the classroom teacher, principal or designee.

Qualifications and Required Documents

  • A Bachelors degree (foreign-educated degree holders should refer to PDE’s website re: requirements to obtain emergency certification, including having transcripts evaluated by WES (www.wes.org) or another accredited agency in the US)
  • A Pennsylvania Criminal Records check (Act 34) that is clean and less than 5 years old **

  • A Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance History (Act 151) that is clean and less than 5 years old **
    NEW! Effective 1/1/2015, you can now obtain this clearance online!

  • A FBI Criminal History Record that is clean and less than 5 years old **

  • Proof of a TB test or chest x-ray that is less than 3 months

  • 3 professional references (contact information) and/or letters

  • A Resume

  • Routing number and account number for direct deposit setup

  • 2 Valid forms of Identification for I-9.  Click here for acceptable forms.

  • A valid, working email address __ not a college or university address for those will expire! If you do not have a valid email address, it is

 ** Please note: clearances cannot be older than 5 years however, some districts may require new clearances that are less than 1 year old!

Please bring the above required "original" documents to the interview. You will be required to submit official transcripts of your bachelor’s degree. More information on this procedure will be provided to you by an STS HR recruiter during the hiring process.

 

If you have taken any mandated training for Act 126 (Mandated Reporting) and/or Act 71 (Suicide Prevention), please provide proof of training-preferably a certificate of completion. Please include any additional certificates for specialized training (i.e. Crisis Prevention Intervention).

 

Essential Function
Substitute teaching is an essential part of the educational process. Each school year all district’s will look to build a workforce of substitute teachers to help aide their teachers and allow them to be replaced in times of need for the district. Each school district will rely on a qualified and enthusiastic group of sub’s that can step-up and continue the educational process in the absence of a teacher. It’s essential that the substitute teacher continues the primary teacher’s lesson plan so that the curriculum plan at hand continues to be carried out.

Essential duties and responsibilities of this position may vary in nature due to changes in schedule, student or district need, and include but are not limited to:

 

• Reports to the office upon arrival for check-in and reviews the plans and schedules for the day.
• Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about school personnel.
• Assumes the responsibility for overseeing student behavior in the classroom, during lunch, activity periods and out-of-class settings.
• Executes instructional activities with individual students or small groups of students following the absent teachers lesson plans.
• Provides instruction to special needs children who are part of the classroom dynamic.
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
• Proficiency in maintaining efficient classroom management skills.
• Conduct yourself in a polite and professional manner with other staff members and building administrators.
• Other duties may be required that are not enumerated here that are part of the classroom teacher’s curriculum or duties.
